Kickoff May 11
The Canadian Soccer League will kickoff its 2007 season when Windsor Border Stars travel to Centennial Stadium in Toronto’s west-end for the Portuguese Supra home opener on Friday evening, May 11, an 8 p.m. kickoff.
Canada’s 13-team pro soccer league will field 10 teams in 2007, to play a five-month long regular season of 110 games through to the playoffs mid-October, leading to the championship final later that month. That’s a 22-game schedule for each of the five teams in the National Conference and five teams in the International Conference. The International Conference is a new division launched in 2006.
National Conference teams are London City, North York Astros, St. Catharines Wolves, Trois-Rivieres Attak and Windsor Border Stars, while the International Conference teams representing their country of origin and centered in the Toronto area are Canadian Lions, Italia Shooters, Serbian White Eagles, Portuguese Supra and Toronto Croatia.
Brampton will return next year joined by others, including Quebec City, a new franchise in the National Conference and African Icons in the International Conference.
Canadian Lions is a team owned by the Milan Group which has secured the rights as the Canadian member of the international division, to replace the previous Oakville Blue Devils. Trois-Rivieres Attak is a new team in the Province of Quebec introduced by owner Tony Iannitto of last year’s Laval Dynamites. Attak is the reserve team for Montreal Impact of the U.S.-based USL First Division. Brampton Stallions, which represented that community to the north-west of Toronto last season, is taking this year off, while the franchise of last year’s Caribbean Selects was revoked by the league during the off-season.
The season will include the popular Open Canada Cup competition of CSL pro teams together with some of the best senior amateur teams in Central Canada. Ottawa St. Anthony Italia won the Open Canada Cup last year while the CSL championship went to Italia Shooters of the International Division.
