A momentary slip-up in the penalty box with just 11 minutes to go following an 11-game winning streak in the inaugural Women’s Canada Cup and London Selects had lost the most important game of the season at the Cove Road ground here Monday, a 1-0 result to York Region Lady Shooters.

Referee Lisa McNeil had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and forward Ashley Rodrigues of York Region Lady Shooters made no mistake in giving her team the 1-0 lead and the eventual result needed to take the trophy.  Rodrigues had been a threat to London throughout a game that could have gone either way and which most fans expected would go London’s way following their impeccable 11 wins since kickoff in June.

The lively Rodrigues had found the net just two minutes before the penalty box collision that brought down the York Region player, but the goal was ruled offside. 

York Region defeated North York District Allstars by a 3-0 score in the semifinal Sunday and London Selects reached the final with a 4-2 victory over Durham Region Allstars.

London City midfielder Eva Havaris, the recently appointed women’s soccer coach at Fanshawe College, was philosophical about the loss following such an outstanding season: “We missed our chances, just couldn’t finish after being off for more than two weeks, but the result does not change the great season we have had,” she said.
