VAUGHAN SHOOTERS, LES DYNAMITES KEEP PACE IN EASTERN CONFERENCE

Vaughan Shooters and Laval Dynamites kept pace in the Eastern Conference of the Canadian Professional Soccer League with wins on Sunday that except for a late season major collapse  virtually assures the three top teams a place in the playoffs.

Vaughan defeated Toronto Supra by a narrow 1-0 score in ideal conditions at Vaughan Grove, after  Laval Dynamites had inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Oakville Blue Devils at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium at Laval. In one other game played Sunday, Brampton Stallions were held to a 2-2 tie by Border Stars at their home Victoria Park in Brampton to tighten a 4-team race for the vital third spot in the Western Conference.

In an afternoon game, Laval and Blue Devils fought a 1-1 tie until the last five minutes when Laval's Ahmamad Abdelaziz was brought down in the penalty box at the end of a promising run on the Oakville goal and Mohamed Ridouani made no mistake from the spot. Gabriel Pop had opened the scoring for Oakville at 25 minutes and Laval's Nasson Theosmy tied the score one minute later.

Laval are in third place in the east with a 9-3-2 WLT record for 29 points opening a 13-point gap with fourth place Toronto Supra. Oakville remain in second place in the west with a 7-3-4 record.

Vaughan's Cameron Medwin turned out to be a real shooter when he cracked a 20-yard drive to catch the top corner of the Toronto Supra net out of reach of goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez at the 35th minute mark at Vaughan Grove and it was all the Vaughan team needed to secure three important points in the Eastern Conference race.

Vaughan Shooters lift their record to 9-3-3, good for 30 points and second place just a point under leading Toronto Croatia.

Brampton Stallions missed a vital penalty kick opportunity late in the 2-2 tie with Border Stars in a game that could have gone either way but eventually served to put the border team in the hunt for a play off berth, only three points now separating four clubs.

Mladen Dikic opened the scoring for Brampton after just two minutes and Border Stars' Steve Merker tied the game 1-1 at the 30-minute mark.  Yusif Jawando made it 2-1 for Stallions, a goal that came off a Border Stars' player just one minute after the interval, and Aaron Byrd scored the tying gal for the border team at 67 minutes. Five minutes later, an always prolific Kevin McIntosh missed a penalty kick awarded to Brampton.

Brampton have an improved 4-4-8 record for 20 points, while Border Stars sit at 5-9-2 for 17 points in sixth position in the Western Conference.
