A Lynx vs. Ottawa final
Ottawa St. Anthony Italia are heading to the Open Canada Cup Final for the second time in the brief four-year existence of the competition following their 3-1 defeat of Brampton Stallions at the Cove Road ground in London Monday.
The Ottawa team earned full marks for the 3-1 victory, the score being a reflection of the play with Ottawa having a decided edge throughout.
The capital city team will meet the Toronto Lynx in the final and the venue is yet to be announced.
Ottawa St. Anthony Italia, which has been a prominent member of the Ottawa soccer community for more than 50 years, lost the 2004 Open Canada Cup Final to Windsor Border Stars on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie after regulation 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime. The Ottawa team has also reached this year’s Ontario Cup Final and a win means a berth with the other provincial champions for the Canadian Challenge Cup and the national amateur title.
Ladislas Kikunda opened the scoring for Ottawa Italia on a free kick at the 28tminute in Monday’s semifinal and Abraham Osman made it 2-0 four minutes later. Brampton forward Hugo Herrera scored five minutes after the interval to make it 2-1, but Alain Njima increased the lead to 3-1 for Ottawa at 74 minutes, the final score.
