ST. CATHARINES ON TOP WITH 2-0 VICTORY

St. Catharines Roma Wolves vaulted to the top of the Western Conference of the Canadian Professional Soccer League following their 2-0 shut out of Toronto Croatia at Memorial Park in Mississauga on Friday.

Metro Lions came alive with their first league win of the season, defeating London City 1-0 on Citys ground of Cove Road and in a third game played in the CPSL, Vaughan Sun Devils again looked strong with a 3-1 win over a slipping North York Astros at the Dufferin Clark ground in Vaughan just north of Toronto.

Two goals, one by a penalty kick in a brief four-minute period just before half time, did the damage when St. Catharines Wolves handed Toronto Croatia their fifth loss in just six league games so that while Croatia became entrenched at the foot of the Western Conference, the win was an important one for St. Catharines to put the team from the Niagara Peninsula on top with 10 points, a point ahead of Hamilton Thunder.

Joe Carbonara scored from the penalty spot at the 40th minute mark and Gary McGuchan made it 2-0 four minutes later. The 2-0 St. Catharines lead held up despite the ejection in the second half of their Lucio Ianiero.

A goal by forward Hayden Fitzwilliams at the 27th minute was all that Metro Lions needed for three points in a 1-0 shutout of London City who were bidding for the top position of the Western Conference. Metro Lions have played just four games in the league campaign so far and improve to a 1-1-2 WLT record for five points, while London City are now at 2-3-1 for seven points.

North York Astros took a 1-0 lead on a goal at the 9th minute by Alen Majstorovic in their game against an improving Vaughan Sun Devils at Dufferin Clark, but the lead was short lived when after 18 minutes Vaughans Timothy Garzon made it 1-1. Michael Cipriani put the Sun Devils two up at 40 minutes and Cameron Medwin made it 3-1 just on half-time. Medwin was chosen the games best player in the Rogerstelevised game.

Vaughan Sun Devils remain in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 3-1-1 record for 10 points, while the Astros now have a 2-4-2 record following their second successive loss for eight points.
