WIZARDS THROUGH IN A SQUEAKER

SUNDAY, August 3--A golden goal in the first minute of overtime by Malawi international midfielder Peter Mponda gave the Ottawa Wizards a 1-0 win in an Open Canada Cup squeaker against Laval Dynamites at the OZ Stadium on Sunday.

The win was game two in the third round of the Open Canada Cup following a 2-1 triumph by St. Catharines Roma Wolves over London City at the Cove Road ground in London on Friday.

Mpondas goal came following a tense scoreless 90-minute struggle that, although the Wizards had a decided edge in the second half, could easily have gone the other way.

A gallant squad from Quebec fought desperately to gain victory over the defending Canada Cup and CPSL champions. Laval goalkeeper Nicolas Pinto was particularly outstanding in keeping the Wizards off the scoresheet in the second half.

In Fridays game, with just minutes to go in a 1-1 see-saw struggle that looked very much like going into overtime, a miscue in the London goalmouth gave St. Catharines Wolves the goal they needed and a 2-1 win over London City.

Wolves forward Carlo Arghitto capped a super week by scoring the winner, his eighth of the season at the 83rd minute mark when he capitalized on a mis-kick by City keeper Haidar Al-Shalbani to win what might turn out to be one of the most important wins of the season for St. Catharines Wolves.

Arghitto was outstanding on Wednesday night in leading his team with a three-goal natural hat-trick in a 3-1 league win over North York Astros.

Thomas Latocha, brought into the St. Catharines pro team from the clubs second string for just the second time, scored his first goal in the CPSL to open the scoring at 36 minutes for a 1-0 half-time lead.

Eris Tafaj scored with a screamer of a free kick from 40 yards to level the score 1-1 for London City and just when the game appeared to be heading for overtime, Arghitto scored the winner for St. Catharines.
