HITMEN ADVANCE ON PENALTY KICKS

Brampton Hitmen defeated London City on penalty kicks following a hard-fought 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time in a Rogers Cup Wild Card game at Cove Road in London Friday.

At the same time, Ottawa Wizards announced their withdrawal from the Rogers Cup, citing in part disagreement with the rules of competition as the reason for not continuing and the league has indicated a statement will be made over the weekend regarding the withdrawal of Ottawa.

In the meantime, the CPSL has announced a revised schedule for the remainder of the weekend which means a semi-final game on Saturday and the final Sunday afternoon and this is followed by the CPSL’s Annual Awards Night immediately after the final game.

Brampton forward Hugo Herrara opened the scoring when he beat London goalkeeper Haidar Al-Shaibani from close range at the 34th minute mark for a 1-0 half-time score and the goal stood up until the 83rd minute when London’s Attila Salamon deflected a free kick past Brampton ‘keeper Roy Blanche.

The game went into penalty kicks with Blanche, Adolfo Mella, Kurt Mella, Hugo Herrara and Ruben Flores finding the net for the Hitmen and Stu Pow, Haidar Al-Shaibani and Erik Elmauer replying for London City, a 5-3 count in favour of the team from the GTA.

There will be one game only on Saturday when Vaughan Sun Devils meet Western Conference winner Hamilton Thunder at 5.30 pm, the winner meeting Brampton Hitmen in the Rogers Cup Final on Sunday, a 3.15 start.
