FIVE TEAMS REMAIN FOR OPEN CANADA CUP BATTLE

Five of the original 22 entries that kicked off the Open Canada Cup competition back on May 21 in pursuit of the trophy and a $10,000 cash prize will come together at Cove Road in London during the Labour Day weekend to fight out the last stage including the final game on Labour Day, Monday, September 6.

The five are last weekends quarter-final winners Windsor Border Stars, Metro Lions, Capital City Ambassadors, Ottawa St. Anthony Italia and the host club and defending 2003 Open Canada Cup winner, London City.

Capital City Ambassadors and Ottawa St. Anthony Italia are two of 14 amateur teams that took up the invitation in a tournament expected in years to come attract senior teams from across Canada.

The eventual aim is to have a complete Canadian club championship with the winner moving to the CONCACAF Confederation (North, Central America and the Caribbean) leading to the world club title.

London City will play Metro Lions in a Wild Card game after being awarded the host role for the final weekend earlier this year. Competition rules provide the host team an opportunity to advance to the semi-finals if they win a Wild Card game against one of the four quarter-final winners in a draw that took place in this second year of the Open Canada Cup back on May 10.

By co-incidence, the Wild Card game brings together last years finalists, a game won by London City over Metro Lions on penalty kicks following a deadlock after 90 minutes and overtime.

The Wild Card game will be played on Friday evening, September 3, while the two semi-finals will bring together Windsor Border Stars vs. Capital City Ambassadors in the opening game and the Wild Card winner vs. Ottawa St. Anthony Italia in the second game on Sunday, September 5. The Open Canada Cup Final will be played on Labour Day, Monday, September 6.

The final weekendall games at Cove Road, London:

Friday, September 3, Cove Road 8.38 p.m. WILD CARD GAME: Metro Lions vs. London City

Sunday, September 5, Cove Road 5.18 p.m. SEMI-FINAL: Windsor Border Stars vs. Capital City Ambassadors (Ottawa)

Sunday, September 5, Cove Road 8.38 p.m. SEMI FINAL: Ottawa St. Anthony Italia vs. Metro Lions or London City
