BRAMPTON HITMEN DEFEAT LA SANGIORGESE OF ITALY 4-1 SUNDAY

La Sangiorgese of Italy completed its week-long tour of southern Ontario on a losing note, a 4-1 defeat in the hands of Brampton Hitmen at Victoria Park in Brampton Sunday.

The Hitmen, last seasons Rogers Cup winner and the current champions of the Canadian Professional Soccer League, always looked the best after taking the lead early in the first half and while the visitors were not totally submerged they were stretched to keep on terms with the generally more capable and stronger team from just north-west of Toronto.

The team from Calabria played five games on its Canadian tour and the loss to Brampton gave it a 2-3 split, losing the opener to Hamilton Sparta by a 4-1 result, winning three against Weston Dow, 2-1, York Jets 1-0, and Guelph Calabria, 4-0, before meeting the pro Brampton Hitmen in the finale.

Commenting on the his teams first visit to Canada, La Sangiorgese president Furfaro Cesare was pleased with the trip and the Canadian hospitality, but he explained: Canadian soccer is more physically aggressive, he said through an interpreter.

The team is based in a small Calabria community with regional status in soccer and to progress through the professional ranks is very expensive, said Furfaro.

A Canadian group originally from Calabria and now living in southern Ontario started planning for the Italian teams visit back in 2002.

We have put two years into this and its been well worth it, although five games in such a short time is probably a lot of soccer in such a short time, said spokesperson Isidoro Seminard.

The Hitmen took the lead on a strike by forward Ivan Jurisic at the 15 minute mark, midfielder Angel Velasquez made it 2-0 three minutes to half-time, Jonathan Bustamante increased the lead to 3-0 with a picture goal from 12 yards at the 74th minute mark and forward Kurt Mella completed the Brampton scoring at the 83rd minute.

La Sangiorgeses lone marker was scored by Virginio Ferraro at 89 minutes.
