JAMAICA'S PORTMORE UNITED HERE SEPTEMBER 12

While Metro Lions showed a spark of promise in being a finalist in the Open Canada Cup last season, only to lose on penalty kicks to London City in that memorable game at Cove Road on September 1, the Scarborough-based team failed to attract much attention, finishing fifth of six in the Eastern Conference standings of the Canadian Professional Soccer League.

Thats all changed this year as the Lions become somewhat of a buzz with the fans and other teams alike as they go from strength to strength as this season progresses. They are in the Open Canada Cup Finals and are making a strong bid for a CPSL playoff position leading to the league championship.

But Metro Lions are in for their biggest test in announcing a highly attractive friendly game on Sunday, September 12 at Birchmount Stadium against Portmore United of the National Premier Division in Jamaica.

Portmore United, here at the invitation of the Metro Lions, has produced its fair share of Jamaican national team players in recent years, particularly in the 90s when the Reggae Boyz as the national team is fondly known, captured the hearts of soccer fans world-wide in reaching the World Cup Finals in 1998.

It should be an interesting contest, with a Metro Lions team that is well-balanced with an attacking edge that has produced more goals in league results than any other team in the CPSL's two divisions.

Forwards Craig Patton, Haiti-born Maxim Dorneval and Hayden Fitzwilliams, who recently returned to the team after playing in his native Trinidad & Tobago, are the main reason for this, accounting for most of the goals in the current league and cup campaign.

Coach Goran Miscevic, with a strong playing and coaching career in Europe has been a big part of the teams success this year and is quick to point out some of the players responsible for the teams good defensive record, like former under 17 national team midfielder Marko Janjicek, central midfielder sometimes sweeper Sasha Kosanovic, defender Justin Phillips and former St. Vincent national team member Caswain Mason, very much the ideal two-way player.

Kickoff time on September 12 is 4 p.m.
