HECTOR MARINARO SR. HONOURED
HECTOR MARINARO SR.

Hector Marinaro Sr., team manager for the CPSLs Brampton Hitmen, was honoured in El Salvador recently by FAS F.C., one of the top pro teams in that country and in Central America.

Marinaro, originally from Argentina where he played top flight soccer before moving to Central America and Canada, has established himself over a 40-year period as one of the most popular and respected members of the Canadian soccer community.

Marinaro played for five years with FAS and the club invited him and arranged the trip so he could be suitably honoured. He was a member of the squad that won three championships in that short time and the ceremony was in conjunction with a game on November 14 against Alianza F.C. at Santa Ana, about 70 km from Sal Salvador, the capital.

In Canada, Hector Marinaro Sr. played for Montreal Concordia in the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League in the early sixties and went on the play, coach and hold managerial positions with Toronto Falcons, Toronto Italia and the Toronto Blizzard in the CSL and NASL, as well as indoor teams Toronto Shooting Stars and Toronto Thunderhawks, both of the NPSL. He joined Brampton Hitmen in 2003.

Interestingly, El Salvador paid tribute to Hector Sr. almost exactly a month after Hector Marinaro Jr. was celebrated in Cleveland, Ohio in October where he retired as the most successful indoor soccer player in U.S. history. Marinaro Jr. holds the U.S. indoor record for the most points, 2,787, and all scored in a pro career since he left his Mississauga home for the U.S. 25 years ago.

Cleveland Force president Paul Garofolo said recently Marinaro Jr., now 40, is to indoor soccer what Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Gary Bonds are to their sports.
