ASTROS, SHOOTERS, DURHAM FLAMES AND METRO LIONS ALL REGISTER WEEKEND WINS
Astros were full value for their second win of the season, a result that provided the Olympians with an unexpected setback in what is already a tight race for the top position in the Western Conference. Ryan Lucas put Olympians ahead at the 21 minute mark, but a well earned goal by Astros' Carlos Grassino tied the game 1-1 just before the interval. In a well played second half North York Astros took a 2-1 lead at the 71st minute on a goal by Andrei Malychenkov and the score held for a 2-1 Astros victory.Astros improve to a 2-8-4 WLT for 10 points, but remain at the foot of the Western Conference two points behind London City. York Region Shooters created a 3-way tie for the runner up position in the Eastern Conference by defeating a struggling Toronto Supra, 2-0, at Highland Park.Second half goals by Paul Finisi and Aundrea Rollins at the 73rd and 80th minutes respectively gave the Shooters their sixth league win of the season. York Region progress to a 6-5-3 record for 21 points and are placed fourth in the standings behind Metro Lions and Montreal Dynamites. These three teams trail runaway Ottawa Wizards with 37 points. Supra remains at the foot of the Eastern Conference with a 3-7-1 record for 10 points. Durham Flames went into Saturday's game needing a win to stay in contention for a playoff berth and the home side was strong in winning 3-1 over Vaughan Sun Devils. The victory gives the Flames a 6-6-2 WLT record for 20 points, while the Sun Devils have a 3-8-2 record for 11 points in sixth position in the eastern standings. Two second half goals by Metro Lions forward Peter Firebrace gave the Lions an important 2-0 win and three points over Mississauga Olympians at the Twin Arenas ground in Mississauga on Sunday. The win moved Lions into second spot with 24 points from an 8-5-0 WLT record and the loss for Olympians was their second in three days. Olympians now have a 6-5-5 record and they retain the runner-up position in the Western Conference with 23 points.
